Coal mining and its impact on the environment

Protection of the environment is constantly one of the important priorities of our company, and the annual costs incurred in environmental protection reach almost 500 million Czech crowns.

The company's approach to the environmental issues can be characterised as follows:

  • striving to maximise rapid remediation of the negative impacts if they have already taken place,
  • efforts to minimize the negative effects of coal mining and processing on the environment.

The first tier where decisions concerning impacts on the environment are made is the mining solution.

In the mining solution, decisions are taken as to how and where the open cast mining operations are to progress, what new land is to be acquired and what impact it might have on the water regime. Decisions are also made as to where and how overburden soils are to be deposited and how and where external dumps are to be established during the mining operations. The policy is to deposit as much of these soils as quickly as possible into mined out spaces.

In the mining solution, we also decide how fertile or potentially fertile the top soils which are going to be stripped are, and where to deposit them so that their future utilisation is as easy as possible. There is also determined the geometry of dumps and residual pits, thus giving a rough outline as to how the future countryside will look. Also determined, are the technologies to be deployed and what the costs of future technical landscape reclamation are going to be. The mining solution is planned and designed for the entire expected lifespan of the open cast mine.
